BCCI Approaches Gautam Gambhir for Team India’s Next Head Coach: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly placed Gautam Gambhir at the top of their list to become the next men’s team head coach. According to ESPNCricinfo, further discussions are expected after IPL 2024, with the final slated to take place on May 26 in Chennai.

ESPNCricinfo has also reported that Dravid is not keen on another tenure after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The former Indian captain, who succeeded Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup, has had reasonable success but has failed to break India’s ICC trophy jinx so far.

Gambhir, meanwhile, has no international experience as a coach. However, he has had two successful years as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023, leading them to the playoffs. Currently, the former opener is mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, where they will finish the league stage as table toppers.

The BCCI posted the advertisement last week, seeking the head coach for the Indian men’s team. The board mentioned that the position would cover all formats, with the tenure starting in July 2024 and lasting until December 2027.

Gautam Gambhir: Key Player in India’s World Cup Triumphs

Former opening batter Gautam Gambhir was among the key players for India during the inaugural T20 World Cup final in 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Gambhir scored 75 against Pakistan in 2007 and a patient 97 against Sri Lanka in 2011, helping India chase down 275.

The 42-year-old also turned the fortunes of the Kolkata Knight Riders around, leading them to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. Under his captaincy, the Knight Riders also reached the final of the 2014 Champions League T20.

The BCCI’s consideration of Gambhir, despite his lack of international coaching experience, adds an intriguing twist to the search for India’s next head coach. Will Gambhir’s successful mentorship in the IPL translate to success on the international stage? Fans and analysts alike are keen to see how this potential appointment unfolds.
